Can a person be dichotomous?

I'm writing a paper and the sentence is: "From his birth in 1927 to his papacy today, Pope Benedict XVI has remained a dichotomous scholar, both deeply introverted and frankly opinionated, not desiring greater responsibility in the Church and yet carrying out these responsibilities with enthusiasm and vigor." I've never described a person as dichotomous, but that's the first adjective that comes to mind... Should I say it was his nature that was dichotomous or is "dichotomous scholar" fine?
