What do you think of the Pope declaring that "Christians have become a population of nonbelievers"?
He is right, by and large, but this didn't happen overnight. It happened because churches have evolved into lowest-common-denominator institutions. In truth, little irequired of a Christian these days, except putting money in the collection plate and putting in an appearance. In some ways Chrsitianity didn't fall prey to materialism. Instead it created it. Western Europe, where Chrsitianity's greatest intellectual figures lived and died, was the one area of the world where men embraced technology and all its trappings. That may sound like a stretch, but the only real devout Christians you see are those who live in Third World countries.
